Birthday 4 December 2009

Fro the first time in my 23 years, I think, the temperature outside never made it to my age. At eight o’clock this morning, wunderground.com showed -12.6 degrees.

And then I went skiing.

I suppose I had to, of course, what with the day off work and all, but it’s hard to describe just how cold -12.6 degrees really is. The unfrozen trickle of the Snake River swirls in gelid grayness. Every body of water steams. The car creeks and groans until 20 minutes later, it finally reaches and acceptable temperature. And fingers and toes cease to exist, lost to numbness almost as soon as they hit the cold. The efficient body cuts off blood flow to those less important regions, but the mind keeps pushing. There is skiing to be done after all.
